Nottingham Songs debut album
Nottingham Songs Part 1, the debut
album by singer-songwriter Mat Andasun released in July 05 features new
work commissioned with funds by the Arts Council of England East
Midlands and some old favourites from the gigged back catalogue.
“The music I make gets called all sorts - Brazlian fusion, electonica,
jazz funk, 80's soul, singer-songwriter, crap - and isn’t that
well known in England. This doesn't stop me from charging
people to listen to it. I think it’s really exciting stuff to
listen to - it covers lots of different bases. It’s got instrumentals
and songs, with rich chill out sounds layered with electronica and
sitting on top of classic Brazilian percussion grooves. There are songs
in there to sing along to, and there are musical epics that take you on
a journey. So there.”
Mat is delighted to be able to work
with some amazing musicians in the making of the CD, a few of whom have
been working with him since 1998: Dave Sturt (bass, laptop and looper)
Jeff Davenport (drums and samples), Huw Rees(keyboards) and Ben Martin
(flute and sax) and Manchester percussionist Richard Sliwa (formerly of
Inner Sense).
The inclusion of Bosco de Oliveira is
an exciting one: “I’ve played Samba since 1992 and am acutely aware of
how much I, and every other Sambista, owes to Bosco and the London
School where it all started. Bosco’s experience and phenomenal playing
will be an outstanding contribution to this recording.”
Mat’s style covers Brazilian,
chill-out, electronica and contemporary jazz but comparisons with Nick
Drake have left Mat surprised: “I'm not a bit like him. I'm bald
for starters, and I reckon I can dance better than him."
